Description
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is one of the nation's most effective environmental action groups, combining the grassroots power of 1.2 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of more than 350 lawyers, scientists and other professionals. In our award-winning, LEED-Gold rated San Francisco office, scientists, litigators, and policy experts focus on public lands, water, oceans, global warming, energy, and public health issues. We offer in-depth guides to green living and green business practices and are dedicated to operating our non-profit in a way that demonstrates our commitment to the environment. (please visit www.nrdc.org for more information) We are proud to be a part of the San Francisco Green Business Program.

  • The majority of our office furniture, doorframes, insulation, carpet, and doors are constructed of recycled materials.

  • Our cleaning supplies consist of non-toxic and naturally-derived products that are safer for human and environmental health.

  • We were the first in our building to work with building staff and Tully's Coffee to implement a composting system in addition to participating in the city-run recycling program.

  • Our energy usage is half of what California's Title 24 Energy Standards require due to our purchase and installation of highly efficient appliances, lighting, and HVAC system.

  • After we take all feasible efforts to reduce our carbon emissions, our remaining emissions from employee travel and office operations are offset with certified carbon credits.

  • We implemented office guidelines for NRDC-sponsored events that include using local businesses whenever possible, restricting food purchases to sustainably grown or raised products, prohibiting the purchase and use of bottled water, and using flatware whenever possible.

  • NRDC also purchases Water Restoration Certificates from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to ensure that the equivalent of our annual water consumption is recovered and used to enhance restoration of river systems under environmental stress.
