Description
I started scout in 2010 out of a love of design and a passion for the old fashioned and the environment.  I've been an interior designer in the commercial world for over 10 years, now my personal style and convictions are the basis for my business. We have but one planet to share.  scout sustainable design's mission is wholly based on creating beautiful, functional, efficient spaces while conserving our planet's resources and enriching our own local economy. By using local materials and craftspeople, we support local businesses, reduce the fuel needed for transportation, and improve the quality of life in our communities.  Reclaimed and vintage materials bring inherent character to a project while conserving new resources and diverting usable product from a landfill. California has an extraordinary inventory of sustainable options to draw upon. From locally produced tile to reclaimed wood to vintage fabrics and much more, it is scout's purpose and pleasure to bring these options to the design table. Around the scout office we do things like use daylight almost exclusively and open windows for cooler air. Our computers are set to energy-saving mode and turned off every night. Junk mail is thwarted at the source thanks to catalogchoice.org and stopjunkmail.org. Supporting the good guys is part of it too - we run on CREDO mobile phones and love their progressive work. Outside the office we scoot to and from appointments, jobsites, and suppliers on a late model Vespa getting 50 to 70mpg. When there's large cargo in tow we borrow a hybrid from the local car share program.  Of course the three R's are no-brainers, but the most important R, we think, is Rethink. We buy less, print less, reuse more, and think creatively when we have a need - in our office or on a project. That's design. That's what we do.
